Tesla Cybertruck to get ‘finger saving’ powered frunk improvement

Tesla Cybertruck Chief Engineer, Wes Morrill said that a big improvement is coming to the frunk of this electric pickup truck via an over-the-air (OTA) update.

The discussion on the front-powered frunk started after X user Trevor Scott posted YouTuber Doug Demuro’s video clip. Where Demuro is telling viewers that the powered frunk doesn’t stop on anything such as a human limb and it could hurt badly by cutting through skin.

Unlike DeMuro, who didn’t demonstrate the “skin” angle, user @dblcapcrimpin gave it a reality check and explained the real problem through his Cybertruck.

First, he placed his arms on the front side and let the frunk close. The frunk quickly returned after getting resistance from arms.

Next, he placed his fingers on the side of the vehicle and closed the frunk on them. This time the frunk fully closed and didn’t return the way it did on arms.

The demonstrator opened the frunk via his phone and showed the results. His fingers had deep marks of being compressed between the two-panel edge.

The effect of the compression was deep enough to create marks and bruises if not cutting the skin. However, things might be different in the case of any children.

Eventually, the discussion brought in Morrills who’s been responsible for all of the changes and design improvements for Cybertruck. He said that the Tesla team is working on fixing this problem via an OTA update. The time of the rollout remains unknown at the moment.

By looking into Cybertruck’s owner manual, I’ve also found two warnings for owners related to the frunk and the panels.

“Before opening or closing the hood, it is important to check that the area around the hood is free of obstacles (people, hands, and objects). Failure to do so may result in damage or serious injury”.

The company also has a warning for users while interacting with the panel area around the truck.

“Use caution around the panel edges on Cybertruck, including the doors, powered frunk, tailgate, and surrounding panels”.

We’ll have to wait to see how the new software prevents the truck from closing the frunk on the owner’s fingers.
