Rivian today announced that its support for North American Charging Standard (NACS) will rollout this March and the company will offer a free charging adapter for R1 vehicle owners. This new announcement follows last year’s commitment to provide NACS in next-gen vehicles.

Earlier Ford became the first non-Tesla automaker to open NACS support for Ford F-150 Lightning and Mustang Mach-E EVs.

Tesla currently has 27,000 stalls, 15,000+ NACS stalls, and 500+ stalls for other electric vehicles as of February 2024.

Rivian says this addition will allow users to choose from more chargers across their journeys aside from Rivian Adventure Network and other public chargers.

To prepare the vehicle, Rivian will release a new software update and a Rivian-approved NACS DC charger. R1 vehicles come with a Combined Charging System (CSS) port and the vehicle requires NACS DC to connect a supercharger.

Similar to Ford, Rivian also promised to send a free NACS adapter for R1 buyers without any charger at all. The EV maker has not announced any limit or deadline to keep the free offer active.

Rivian also cautions customers over the use of non-Rivian NACS DC adapters as it may damage the vehicle.

March:

Rivian R1 vehicles will be able to access Tesla Superchargers starting in March this year. The company is currently adding these charging locations to the mobile app’s trip planner and the adapter shipment also follows subsequently.
