iOS 18 code leak shows iPhone 16 models with A18 chipset
Apple’s next major software release – iOS 18 appeared in a new code leak and revealed some new insights about iPhone 16 models and the A18 Bionic chipset.
In an exclusive report, Macrumors shared details about the early stage development of iOS 18 and the reference code found for new iPhones.
iOS 18 codenamed “Crystal” carries four unreleased iPhone models identified as iPhone 16. These are:
- D47
- D48
- D93
- D94
Past information suggests that the models are D47 – iPhone 16, D48 is iPhone 16 Plus, D93 is iPhone 16 Pro and D94 is iPhone 16 Pro Max.
It was speculated that iPhone 16 lineup will consist of an “Ultra” model but that doesn’t appear anywhere in this iOS 18 code leak.
However, the report gives an explainer on how it could follow the D94 with a suffix to lead the entire series.
For example, the iPhone 16 Pro Max, the high-end model of the current-gen iPhones, was developed with “D84S” during the test. The “S” suffix may reflect its new in-house 5G modem. Eventually, the D84S never made it to the launch stage.

Another interesting revelation from the iOS 18 leak includes the A18 Bionic chipset. It shows that the iPhone 16 lineup will use the “t8140” chipset, codenamed “Taihiti” and identified as A18 internally.
This year, the iPhone 15 series came up with a mixed-use of its flagship chip, the Pro model uses the latest A17 Pro chipset, while the no-Pro models – iPhone 15 and 15 Plus carry last year’s A16 Bionic.
Unlike these, the code leak suggests the use of A18 for all four models. Still, there could be some tweaks in frequency for both Pro and non-Pro models.
Additional information about the iPhone 16 models has references for Broadcom Wi-Fi and Bluetooth modules. Yet, there are no insides about the software features of the iOS 18 or any of its capabilities in focus. Meanwhile, there’s still plenty of time left until next year’s WWDC.
