Nissan will invest a $1.4 billion in UK to manufacture new EVs

Nissan has laid out its plan to invest 1.12 billion pounds ($1.4 billion) in the UK to build electric vehicles for its latest models. This move is part of the car maker’s participation in the UK’s efforts to boost the auto industry.

Nissa confirmed on Friday that two of its latest EVs Qashqai and Juke would be produced in Sunderland, Northeast England with an investment that could scale up to 2 billion pounds. The investment also includes plans for a third battery plant in the country and infrastructure projects.

The company’s Leaf EV is built in a plant in Sunderland for a year and the company fetches its battery from a small plant at the production site.

Nissan is now looking to help 7,000 workers in Sunderland and 30,000 people in the supply chain with all of its operations in the UK. Therefore, the latest investment plan from Nissan is likely to receive support from the UK’s government led by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

This move also follows India’s Tata Motors’ announcement to invest 4 billion pounds in the UK to build an EV battery plant to supply them for its subsidiary Jaguar Land Rover.

With that being said, Nissan planning to switch to fully electric vehicles offering in Europe by 2030. Thus preparing a solid ground for all of the required components is important.
