OpenAI ChatGPT Integration in Apple Siri Voice Assistant

Apple is rolling out iOS 18.2 beta 1 for developers with a set of new AI features including ChatGPT, a much-awaited integration.

The iPhone maker announced a partnership with OpenAI at WWDC24 and ChatGPT integration within iOS 18. Due to the chipset limitation, Apple Intelligence will be available for the iPhone 15 Pro, Pro Max, and iPhone 16 series.

Apple planned to release its own generative AI capabilities with Apple Intelligence and forward searches to ChatGPT as an alternative. However, iOS 18.2 flips this strategy. Apple’s own intelligence is currently missing from iPhone and you can only get generative AI answers from ChatGPT at the moment.

ChatGPT is part of this AI suit and you can find ChatGPT inside Apple Intelligence settings. It can help you write content (text), create images, answer questions, and more.

You can toggle this feature on and off from the ChatGPT settings. It supports OpenAI account sing-in to save your search history.

Where will it work?

iOS 18.2 has integrated ChatGPT for Siri, Visual Intelligence, and Writing Tools.

Starting with Siri, the voice assistant can now forward your queries to ChatGPT when you authorize the assistant. You can disable the permission popup from the Apple Intelligence settings. Once generated, the answer will appear in a pop-up window.

On the other hand, the writing tools have new composition tools. It can help you to write content, change its tone, or rewrite specific content from the on-screen text.

With Visual intelligence, users can capture an image and ask specific questions about the visual with ChatGPT more about the captured object.

ChatGPT’s integration to iOS 18 has improved the user experience but its limited availability is a kind of bummer.
