Tesla is releasing the Full Self Driving (FSD) 12.4.1 for public users and it breaks the long wait for this important version to improve the driver attention monitoring system.

Tesla users reported on social media site X and confirmed this external rollout. This version also covers old Tesla owners for example 2017 Tesla Model 3. You can expect FSD 12.4.1 to expand in batches and it may take some time to verify different models and user groups.

A report revealed that the 12.4.1 version was first released for internal employees. It came a few days after Tesla CEO, Elon Musk announced the FSD 12.4.1 and its public rollout date. Interestingly, the FSD team carefully followed Musk’s comment without further delay.

Tesla version 12 removes more than 300,000 lines of manual C++ code and upgrades the city-streets driving stack to a single end-to-end neural network. Its computing system is trained on millions of driving video data.

FSD 12 advances this self-driving technology with new training and object identification. It intelligently drives through different traffic and road scenarios. However, the system requires a driver to monitor the driveway and be ready to take starting when needed.

This particular situation has annoyed many Tesla users due to driver inattentiveness warning. Prior to the latest update, the driver attention monitoring system relied on a torque-based (steering wheel) system.

There are a few major flaws found in this attention detection solution. It doesn’t check if the driver’s hands are on the wheel but rather if the driver is applying torque. Someone could even place a weight on the wheel to trick the system. It also frequently reminds the driver to apply torque even if the driver is paying attention to the road.

FSD 12.4.1 addresses these issues with a new Vision-based attention monitoring solution. Once enabled, the driver monitoring now primarily relies on the cabin camera to check the driver’s attentiveness. That pretty much helps the car to determine this scenario but Tesla confirmed that the solution also includes wheel torque in combination.
