Tesla today released the Vehicle Autopilot Safety Report for Q1 2024 and recorded 1 crash for every 7.63 million miles with autopilot enabled for the past quarter.

This is by far the best autopilot performance that the company has shared since the beginning. The last best was Q1 2022 when Tesla recorded one crash for every 6.57 million driven miles with autopilot technology.

The highest crash was recorded in the fourth quarter of 2018 and first quarter of 2019 with 1 crash/2.84 million miles and 2.84 million miles respectively. At that time, NHTSA reported one automobile crash per 483,000 miles in the US.

The new data mentioned that drivers without autopilot recorded one crash for every 955,000 miles driven. NHTSA and FHWA’s data from 2022 shows that there was an automobile crash approximately every 670,000 miles.

The numbers shared by the company show that the recent changes made to autopilot technology have brought it far ahead.

Tesla has been releasing quarterly safety data to provide safety information about its vehicles to the public since October 2018. In 2019, the company also began releasing annually updated data about vehicle fires.
