Earlier this year, Tesla introduced new Model Y in the US with a launch series but its affordable RWD model might get delayed according to a new report.

Tesla first listed Model Y as Launch Series, a limited edition celebrates the sales of this refreshed electric vehicle for customers. It was priced at $59,999 with added package of accessories and free configurations.

The Launch Series was meant to be removed from the configurator, and it happened after the introduction of All Wheel Drive (AWD), a stripped down version of the Launch Series. Compared to limited edition, the AWD listed at $48,000 with $7,500 Federal Tax Credit, taking the price down to $41,490.

This is the only trim available for US customers, and an affordable Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) version is still awaited. A top executive from the company previously said that this version may be released later this year.

A new report reveals that RWD trim may take some time to appear on the configurator due to delayed production. The company is currently producing this new model at Fremont Factory and Giga Texas.

It’s expected that the company is now aiming for the late 2025, which aligns with the executive’s information on new affordable Model Y trims in the US. According to the information, Tesla is aiming to produced at least 250,000 models of a cheaper Model Y in 2026.

Meanwhile, Tesla has launched the Model Y RWD versions in the Europe and some Asian markets at lower prices. The reason behind this delay is unknown to us for now, but Tesla CEO, likely to give an answer on this matter at the upcoming Q1 2025 earning call.
