More than 700 million Ghibli style images generated with ChatGPT in one week

ChatGPT has created a new milestone in terms of usage and revealed that more than 700 million images have been generated with ChatGPT in the past week, and the majority of these are exclusive to Ghibli style.
Brad Lightcap, COO of OpenAI, said well over 130 million users have generated over 700 million images since March 25, 2025. It is revealed that India has led to a massive surge in user base for OpenAI and noted as the “fastest growing ChatGPT market”.
Last week, OpenAI announced the GPT-40 image generation model. This is integrated into the chatbot instead of using a separate model like DALL-E. The model is improved for fine-tuned image generation including better text rendering, prompt understanding and leverage its trained data and chat content.
With text prompt, you can create a 3D character based on a specific description. However, users have found the image transformation tool more interesting.
All you need to do is to upload an image and ask the chatbot to transform it into something else. For example, Ghibli style, which has become a major trend online. Many online users have been generating Ghibli images and sharing them online.
However, this popularity also met with some constraint and started showing effect on OpenAI’s server. The company has limited the usage to provide access to such feature for all users.
“We appreciate your patience as we try to serve everyone, the team continues to work around the clock,” Brad continues.
OpenAI has also started distributing the new image generation model for free users with 3 images per day.
