The U.S. Space Force has selected Rocket Lab to launch Department of Defense’s national security missions for its National Security Space Launch (NSSL) Phase 3 Lane 1 program, with a $5.6 billion contract price.

The contract is labeled as indefinite delivery and quantity with rocket launching through June 2029. The NSSL plans to launch at least 30 missions within this contract, which may extend to more launches through 2034.

These launches will be carried with Neutron, Rocket Lab’s 13-ton reusable carbon composite medium-lift rocket. It is under development to meet the customer requirements and national security missions.

It covers single and multi-satellite constellation deployment with a max payload capacity of upto 13,000 kg. The rocket maker is planning to launch the first Neutron rocket in the second half of 2025.

If everything goes well, Rocket Lab will complete individual task orders awarded within the NSSL program. The first Neutron launch will happen from Launch Complex 3 in Wallops Island, Virginia.

“Neutron is a powerful new launch option that will set a new standard for performance, affordability, and reliability in medium launch, and its selection to the program demonstrates a high degree of confidence by the Department of Defense in Neutron’s capabilities ahead of its first launch later this year. We can’t wait to showcase Neutron as the important platform it will become for the Department of Defense.” said Peter Beck, Rocket Lab Founder and CEO.
