Tesla CEO, Elon Musk said the Model Y will be the bestselling car of 2025 for the third year in a row, as this electric vehicle (EV) continues to receive wide-spread attention from customers.

For the past three years, this model remained dominant in the world of EVs, in 2023, Tesla sold more than 1.2 million Model Ys in the global market. While the data for 2024 is pending, Tesla’s sales for the past year increased to around 1.8 million units.

That said, it appears that the car sold more than what it had in a year earlier. So, it’s expected that the Model Y has been the most owned car on the planet in 2024.

However, 2025 is a challenging year for the EV maker as it is facing more competition from Chinese companies.

Earlier this year, Tesla gave the Model Y a refresh with a facelift including a light bar and better aerodynamics. The rear side has reflective cross-car lamps that is unique. The inside has better seats, an improved deck with ambient lighting, powered rear seats and a new 8-inch passenger row screen.

The vehicle is on the sale in Asia, Europe and North America with a limited edition and affordable models are yet to make a wide release. Since late February, Tesla has been delivering this vehicle to the new owners. The Model Y is likely to grow sales as well as the production to meet all orders.

But we’ll have to wait and see how better Model Y performs in 2025 and whether it will maintain the streak as the best-selling car on the planet this year.
