Tesla aiming for unsupervised FSD within v13
Tesla has released features and plans for FSD v13 and the company is aiming to achieve unsupervised Full Self Driving during the course of this upgrade.
While sharing this update on social media site X, Ashok Elluswamy, Director of AI Software at Tesla wrote “team’s aiming to get to feature complete for unsupervised FSD with the v13 update”.
That’s a big aim for the company as it’s chasing full autonomy for new and existing vehicles.
Since the initial version, FSD has required human supervision to monitor the car’s autonomous movement. Though the car can drive automatically on public roads and recognize objects, pedestrians, and traffic signals, the system needs human intervention in complex situations.
Other than that, an unsupervised version will remove this barrier of supervision and the EV will drive fully autonomously. Unsupervised self-driving is an aim for mobility business and it’s an industry-wide race among top automakers.
Alphabet’s Waymo and GM’s Cruise have already entered this field with robotaxis. Car makers are also adding ADAS features to provide a smart driving experience. Amid Cruise’s downfall, Waymo is accelerating its operations in different cities.
Tesla sees this autonomous market as an opportunity and fully autonomous driving is a key to achieving a lead in the competition.
In October, Tesla revealed new autonomous technologies including Cybercab. This vehicle is designed with unsupervised self-driving and has two seats and no steering wheel.
Cybercab will enter production in 2026-27 but the EV maker is keen on introducing ride-hailing services in California and Texas next year.
The ride-hailing fleet will include Tesla Model 3, Model Y, Model S, Model X, and Cybertruck. These EVs will run unsupervised FSD but changes for the interior remain unknown.
