Tesla has announced that its Cybertruck electric pickup truck is now officially profitable, which comes within a year of launching this stainless steel vehicle in public.

The company started delivery in December last year with the Foundation series through invitation and sold more than 24,000 units as of October 2024. This figure is expected to surpass Ford and Rivian in the electric pickup truck category.

After unveiling in 2019, the company had been figuring out the vehicle’s production, which was quite a challenge with those steel plates covering the vehicle.

Eventually, Tesla figured out the production phase and rolled out Cybertruck for customers. Now, it’s gradually improving its weekly output to assemble new trucks out of the factory.

Last month, Tesla rolled out Full Self Driving (FSD) for Cybertruck and soon to open orders for a less expensive version of this EV.

Here’s what Wes Morrill, Cybertruck’s Lead engineer wrote on this achievement:

“Cybertruck profitability <1 year from the start of production, congrats team! This is an impressive milestone for the manufacturing and operations team ramping successfully, step by step improving yield, and quality, and reducing overtime.

Also a great success of thousands of individual suppliers as we can only ramp as fast as the slowest and least lucky part.

Finally, want to point out the strong collaboration between the manufacturing and design in the development phase tweaking things to be easier to manufacture and ultimately make this ramp possible.”
