Tesla aims for Cybercab volume production in 2026

Tesla is confident that its Cybercab autonomous driving electric robotaxi could reach volume production in 2026. This will be a major milestone for the EV maker as it embarks on a whole new product segment.

Tesla unveiled Cybercab at the We, Robot event on October 10. It comes without a steering wheel and paddle. It is a mix between Cybertruck and Model 3/Y exterior but it has some of its outlook features.

That includes the front low funk with lighbar headlights and the interior has only two passenger seats with lots of legroom. The front deck has a large display to show information about the ride and the navigation.

Passengers can use this display for entertainment and media consumption as their ride progresses to the destination. The UI shown at the event includes a destination progress bar, which hovers over the screen on the top.

The car has butterfly doors, which opens and closes automatically. Then the company provided a trunk area to host customers’ luggage.

The demo version had cameras all over and the design is optimized for autonomous ride-hailing services and self-driving. At the event, Elon Musk, Tesla’s CEO said Cybercab could enter production in 2026 or somewhere in 2027 if delayed.

At today’s Q3 2024 Earning Call, Musk said his company is confident that Cybercab will reach volume production in 2026. He specifically mentioned that this would not be a trial production.

Tesla chief also revealed an initial production capacity of 2 million units per year and could increase production up to 4 million based on improvements and market demand.

Telsa planning to launch Robotaxi services next year in Texas and California but it will deploy Model Y and 3 on the ground before Cybercab kicks in.
