Tesla launches Hands-Free Frunk feature and added new trunk option
Tesla has released a new software update under the 2024.32 branch for some models with a new hands-free frunk feature.
In April this year, the EV maker launched Spring 2024 features with hands-free trunks. It automatically opens the trunk even when your hands are full.
All you need to do is step forward and stand still in front of the trunk with the Phone Key unobstructed. The car will trigger chimes prior to opening the trunk and then start the process.
This functionality is now landed to frunk and you can approach the car to let it open the front storage on its own.
You can access this feature via vehicle settings > Locks > Hands-Free Frunk and Trunk. Make sure your phone settings allow Nearby Interactions for the Tesla app. Or you can open the mobile app and go to Phone Key > Upgrade.
In addition to hands-free frunk, Tesla has brought a new Exclude Home for hands-free closure. It has improved the detection capability of hands-free actions and you can now select Exclude Home when enabling hands-free frunk and trunk to disable this feature at your set home location.
A user posted on social media site X that the latest update has been released for Model X. It means, Model S could be getting this same upgrade.
It’s more likely that the feature is based on ultra-wideband (UWB) support. Tesla released UWB support for its mobile app earlier this year, which improves digital keys.
UWB uses precision tracking to give the car the exact location of the key. Thus, it can also be used for the user’s location while standing in front or back of the car.
This could be an initial rollout and more users may get it soon.
