OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is worried about new AI  startup xAI’s growing computing power according to a new report.

In the first quarter of this year, xAI raised a plan to build a supercomputer for a next-gen model. The company has been buying new AI chipsets from Nvidia to grow its computing capabilities for Grok, its large language model (LLM).

The initial plan for the infrastructure is to include 100,000 Nvidia H100 liquid-could training clusters. This chipset is currently the most demanded AI solution and could be coupled with up to 256 GPUs to speed up exascale workload.

In Early July, xAI shared an update on cluster development and revealed that the work is almost finished as it is installing liquid cooling systems on those AI racks.

In the same month, the company completed cluster development and started training the next model Grok 2 and Grok 2 mini. These models come with improved response speed, accuracy, and generative images.

In a recent post on the social media site X, xAI founder, Elon Musk revealed that the supercomputer development was completed in 122 days. Thus making it the most powerful AI training system in the world.

The AI company has plans to double its training capacity to 200,000 including new 50,000 H200. These numbers are likely to be added in a few months.

OpenAI and Microsoft

TheInformation argues that such an AI cluster would take about a year to complete citing two data center developers. It also mentioned that such power caused unease among other AI giants such as OpenAI and Microsoft.

Sam Altman has told some Microsoft executives that he is concerned about xAI’s computing power, which could surpass OpenAI.

Musk co-founded OpenAI but left the non-profit organization due to some differences. A few years ago, the AI company pulled its biggest move and launched ChatGPT, achieving massive success with millions of users worldwide.

Amid its success, Microsoft has become a key figure by boosting heavy investment in OpenAI. Therefore, both of these companies share technologies and rely on each other.

Aside from xAI, Anthropic’s Claude, and Perplexity are also making huge progress in generative AI and offering features that set them apart from ChatGPT and increasing competition.
