FSD 12.5 for Tesla HW3 goes public with 12.5.1.5 update
Tesla has started sending FSD 12.5 for HW3 (AI3) cars and it comes with the latest version 12.5.1.5 and 2024.26.20 software update.
A few days ago, Tesla released the 2024.26.15 software update with the 12.5.1.4 FSD version. This release was limited to employees but now, users started reporting the latest addition. FSD 12.5 enables a smoother driving experience and less intervention. It has increased the overall braking and pausing as well as acceleration.
However, HW3 customers have been only running FSD 12.3.x and several new changes have not reached these vehicles. That includes the new vision-based driver monitoring system.
Responding to these concerns, the company noted that the development of FSD 12.5 for HW3 cars is managed separately. Therefore, it may need to be verified with more care to provide the same performance as its HW4 counterparts.
The initial timeline to release this support was around the first half of August. However, validation apparently took more than that and the FSD 12.5 for HW3 was delayed to the second half. Still, 12.5.1.4 rollout may be limited and many customers might have to wait for the next wave of updates.
FSD 12.5 for HW3
Tesla has explained that the HW3 cars can now experience a performance level similar to HW4 with FSD 12.5. It’s revealed that Tesla has deployed a few kernels in the compiler to emulate the same operations in HW3 that are natively supported on HW4.
Furthermore, the test and validation are still in progress and the company is finding ways to run FSD 12.5 on both hardware platforms in parity in the future.
The company has some pending changes to bring with upcoming rollouts including combined city and highway software stacks. The EV maker has also planned to optimize the driver monitoring system with the new addition. FSD 12.5 will introduce FSD for the Cybertruck electric pickup truck.
