Logistics provider NFI is piloting Tesla Semi trucks

Third-party logistics provider NFI has been testing the Tesla Semi electric truck announced the company on Tuesday. NFI said these Semis were in action for a couple of weeks in its Patterson, California fleet.

Tesla Semi is the first electric truck from the EV maker that can accelerate up to 60 mph in 20 seconds. It equips new technologies inside the cabin dedicated to the driver. Such features are advanced motor and brake controls. There are screens to monitor front and rear side traffic and edges.

Once charged the truck can deliver around 300 or 500 miles range with 2kWh per mile energy consumption. It can recharge up to 70% battery capacity in 30 minutes with fast charging. The logistics firm revealed that the team issuing these Semis to deliver goods on routes between 250-450 miles with fast charging infrastructure.

The team reported 1.64kw/mile efficiency while driving more than 6,000 miles. Around 60% of these miles are covered at speeds of 50 mph or higher. Unfortunately, the company has not shared its verdict on how many of these units currently piloting to electrify its fleet.

In May this year, beverage firm Pepsico placed a new order to add 50 class 8 Semis. These new units will operate at its manufacturing and distribution facility in Fresno. Pepsico is currently the largest Tesla Semi operator.

Tesla is also working on full-volume production of Semis for quantity distribution partners and new customers. Drone footage from earlier this year revealed the expansion of Giga Nevada to produce these electric trucks. However, EV firm is yet to announce an update on the production status.
