iOS 18.1 will allow NFC apps from third party developers
The upcoming iOS 18.1 will bring new features for users and it is now confirmed that third-party developers will get NFC access for their apps with this new software.
NFC, or Near-Field Communication, is a versatile technology that allows users to communicate between two electronic devices when they are in proximity. This tech is widely adapted for contactless payments and keyless car control.
Apple has specified that developers will be able to use NFC with Secure Element within their apps on iPhone. That will allow them to launch services for:
- In-store payments
- Car keys
- Closed-loop transit
- Corporate badges
- Student IDs
- Home keys
- Hotel keys
- Merchant loyalty
- Reward cards
- Event tickets
The company has plans to bring government IDs in the near future.
Security
Apple will not only open NFC for developers but allow them to secure all transaction information using Secure Element.
SE is a certified chip designed to store confidential information on a device. It aims to protect user security and privacy, enabling improved contactless payments.
How it Works
The latest APIs support iPhone XS or iOS 18.1 or later.
Eligible iOS apps can initiate NFC transactions from within apps with compatible NFC devices. Users can choose any app default contactless app to support Field-detect and Double-click features.
The default contactless app will automatically launch when a user takes an iPhone to a supported NFC terminal. The default contactless app will be when the user double-clicks the side button for devices with Face ID or the home button for touch ID following user authentication.
How developers can participate and Availability
Developers are required to enter an agreement with Apple and request NFC and SE access. That includes a service fee for both of these features. Authorized developers can add NFC APIs to their apps.
The NFC and SE APIs will launch for developers in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, the UK, and the US with iOS 18.1. The iPhone maker will soon expand these APIs to more countries.
