SpaceX expands Direct to Cell constellation with 13 new satellites

On August 10, 2024, SpaceX launched a new Falcon 9 mission carrying 21 Starlink satellites including 13 with Direct to Cell capabilities.

The latest addition will enable to company to expand testing on direct satellite service satellites from orbit. After deployment, Sara Spangelo, Senior Director at SapceX said that Direct to Cell satellite continues to improve and it is preparing for commercial service to customers with US telecom giant TMobile this fall.

Unlike Starlink, Direct to Cell satellite is designed to provide connectivity to smartphones and other smart devices. It doesn’t require additional hardware modification to connect with communication services. Once launched, customers will be able to subscribe to these services similar to a mobile plan.

The latest launch lifted from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.

The mission marks the 21st reflight of the first stage booster, which landed on a droneship after completing a landing burn.
