Rally-Inspired Rivian R3X electric vehicle (EV) will come before the base R3 model when it goes into production somewhere in 2026.

CEO RJ Scaringe revealed his company will launch R2 first. The latest midsize electric SUV was announced in March this year. Its size enables a five-seat package with optimum leg space. The design is derived from the flagship R1S but reduced the price to $45,000. Other features include a redesigned steering wheel with haptic dials, a new UI, a better interior, rear-powered glass, and more.

R3 on the other hand is a midsize crossover with classic shape but advanced looks. The front and the rear sides of the car provide it with an interesting look. On top of that, R3X stands as the performance version of the R3 with more power and aggressive appearance.

R2 and R3 will bring two battery sizes and the large one will offer 300 miles of range with 0-60 mph in 3 seconds. Scaringe expects that R2 will buy some time for Rivian to focus on R3. This new series will mark its debut with R3X but the CEO has not shared a price point for this crossover.

Both vehicles feature native NACS ports and allow users to charge directly via Tesla Superchargers. R2 and R3 are built on the new midsize vehicle platform with optimized internal component size and shrink them down compared to first-gen R1S and R1T.

These two also utilize Rivian’s in-house developed drive unit platform and network architecture, and computer topology. The R3 series also shares the same motor configurations as single, double, and triple motors. The R3X will boast its power from the triple-motor setup to ramp up acceleration.

The electric vehicle (EV) maker has retooled its Normal Illinois factory to improve efficiency and increase output. This facility will house new R2 production for deliveries and the second-gen R1S and R1T.
