Tesla Gigafactory South Extension for AI Supercomputer cluster

Tesla CEO, Elon Musk has shared an update about the under-development Gigafactory site, which will host the new Supercomputer cluster for AI products.

The latest change is part of Tesla’s strategy to advance in Artificial Intelligence for vehicle autonomy and robotics. While shooting the video, Musk said that the cluster will be online within a few months, which aligns with the speed of the construction.

This new cluster will use a massive number of AI chipsets from Nvidia. The company has featured 35,000 H100 GPUs to train Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology. However, the cluster will upgrade with new 50,000 H100 GPUs for large-scale testing and development.

A report from CNBC claimed that the Tesla CEO has redirected some of the Nvidia chipset shipments to X and xAI. Musk replied that Tesla had nowhere to store these AI chips but confirmed that the south extension of Giga Texas is about to be completed. Musk also confirmed an additional 50,000 H100s will be installed for this new cluster.

Later on, drone footage posted by YouTube’s Brad Sloan revealed a giant cooling system being built outside of the supercomputer building. These fans will provide cooling to the supercomputer and help to keep the hardware up and running with optimum performance.

The facility aimed to use 130MW of power and cooling this year and will increase to 500MW over the next 18 months. Aside from Nvidia, the company will also utilize its AI hardware at the new building for model training.
