Tesla Semi electric truck spotted with additional sensors, is it FSD?
Tesla Semi is a driver-oriented electric truck with advanced technologies and now, this vehicle is apparently performing some full self-driving (FSD) moves.
A video posted on Reddit shows a Tesla Semi with some sensors installed on the top of the driver’s cabin. The clip was captured near Gigafactory Nevada. The uploader @gamesyns said that the sensors appeared to be LiDAR an essential component for road mapping. Lidar is the go-to solution for the car and autonomous vehicle industry to provide a detailed 3D perception of the surroundings.
It excels at creating accurate 3D models for autonomous vehicles and road safety. Lidar can emit rapid pulses to detect objects and help the car system make quick decisions. However, Tesla has removed Lidar from its cars and transitioned to a camera-based vision system.
Tesla Semi also has in-built cameras to see the front and rear view for extra safety. However, mapping the front traffic is important to train the computer and Lidar fits perfectly for this job. With this test, speculation arises whether the electric vehicle (EV) maker is developing full self-driving (FSD) for Semis.
This may be a possibility because loaded trucks journies long travel and most of the time these vehicles travel distant roads with low traffic. Therefore, autopilot could be a better way to drive straight empty roads. There, the truck won’t get a chance to make the mistake.
It’s hard to predict whether there is a plan to bring an autopilot feature for the Semi fleet. However, the truck still has a lot of room for improvement and the truck industry is already moving toward autonomous technologies.
Therefore, we can expect Tesla Semi to get such capability in the future and maybe FSD as well.
