Geely Auto has revealed a new lithium-iron-phosphate short blade electric vehicle (EV) battery with improved driving efficiency, better charging rate, and enhanced security.

The new battery equips high-thermal stability, heat-resistant diaphragm with a stable separator paired with electrodes to provide high energy density and improved safety.

Geely has applied Self-Fusion technology on the electrode surface to block short circuits for scenarios such as accidents. If the cell is punctured, an aluminum foil layer will fuse into the battery diaphragm to create an insulating layer to prevent short circuits and thermal runaway events.

Compared to a single needle puncture test, Geely Auto has conducted a similar test with eight simultaneous puncture needles. The test improves the amount of damage received in extreme crash conditions.

The battery was also punctured by eight steel needles in unison with a diameter of 5mm and left to stand for 1 hour with zero negative effect. The new EV battery went through a 5.8mm (5.8x42mm) infantry rifle bullet penetration test without thermal ignition.

This quality test expands beyond with “Six Extremes” serial test including:

  1. Seawater corrosion immersion
  2. Extreme cold environment
  3. High-frequency pack bottom scraping
  4. 26-ton overweight rolling
  5. Single-pack side collision
  6. Fire roasting

It uses a grid frame design, an energy-absorbing cavity, a three-layer sandwich bottom guard plate, CTB integration, a thermal runaway control system, and other safety features. With its compound and safety measures, the battery has reduced the internal chemical reaction rate to expand the cell life.

Based on the lab tests, the new Geely Short blade EV battery can reach 3,500 cycles. This is equal to charging and driving 1 million kilometers. Based on the average 20,000 kilometers per year family car drive, the new short blade could stay in action for up to 50 years.

The new short-blade EV battery delivers 10 to 80 percent charging in 17 minutes and 4 seconds with an average charging rate of 2.45C.
