A recent development has revealed some affordable Rivian electric vehicles (EVs) from the future lineup featuring new technologies and design language for the mass market.

These models appeared after Rivian announced a partnership with Volkswagen to form a joint venture to create new electric architecture and software technologies.

This partnership will enable both companies to develop software, electronic control units (ECUs), and network architecture design. Volkswagen will also use Rivian’s zonal ECU architecture and software stack after 2025. The JV will also work on new solutions to cut vehicle manufacturing costs.

While sharing this news, the company also posted a slide for “Scalable software across multiple platforms”. That includes software services that could be adopted for different vehicles including vans, SUVs, and pickup trucks.

The slide includes the electric delivery van (EDV) designed for commercial partners and currently on duty at Amazon. It also consists of R1T and R1S vehicles, updated recently with new changes and performance improvements. The R2 and R3 models are planned to start deliveries in 2026 with a new generation of platforms and cross-over looks.

There are also five other models covered with a white curtain. The design is unpredictable but has different sizes of silhouettes and SUV-like appearances, which turns more compact. The second generation vehicle has one pending model, the mid-size platform will also bring a model, and three new models are planned for the Affordable lineup.

It suggests that the Rivian R series will have two affordable models and one model for the commercial lineup. Furthermore, the company will improve these second, mid-range, and affordable EVs with adapted and hardware adaptation layers.

Rivian has announced no launch date for any of these cars but it’s now certain that Irvin California-based company has some affordable models planned for the future. Given that Rivian will deliver the R2 and R3 series in 2026, the new affordable EVs might hit the market by 2027 or 28.
