SpaceX has launched Starlink Mini, its most compact satellite internet terminal for consumers at $599. The price may surprise some consumers as it was hyped to be way less than standard.

This new dish is all about its size and portability. You can easily carry it around in a backpack just like a tablet. On the other hand, it has a built-in WiFi router and takes low power consumption.

SpaceX is sending invitations for existing Starlink users to purchase the Mini dish. Therefore, it is available only to limited consumers and the introductory price is $599, which is $100 more than the standard dish at $499.

A few days ago, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said the dish could cost almost half of the Standard terminal. However, the price is not aligned with Musk’s statement. Meanwhile, the Starlink team has explained the reason behind this price increase and what’s coming in the near future.

“Our goal is to reduce the price of Starlink, especially for those around the world where connectivity has been unaffordable or completely unavailable. But in regions with high usage, where Starlink Mini places additional demand on the satellite network, we are offering a limited number of the Starlink Mini Kits to start for $599” wrote SpaceX.

This suggests the price is likely to decline with wide launch for all customers. The early access invite mentioned that the Starlink Mini Kit is tagged with Mini Roam service in the existing Residential service plan for $30/month.

The Roam service includes 50GB of mobile data to use anywhere in the U.S. and $1 per GB after the data cap is exhausted. Also, one invitation is valid for a single order. The new Starlink Mini delivers more than 100 Mbps download and more than 10 Mbps upload speed.

The standard Starlink terminal measures 23.4-inch height, 15.07-inch width, and 1.5-inch thickness. The new Mini dish stands at 11.75-inch height, 10.2-inch width, and 1.45-inch thickness. The measurement shows a massive cut in size to contribute to portability. check the full specifications here.
