German car maker Volkswagen has announced its strategy to win the electric vehicle (EV) market with a new 20,000 euros ($21,000) model for 2027, which could be ID.1.

Volkswagen will launch affordable electric vehicles manufactured in Europe for European customers. The company will premiere the unveiling of an affordable EV in 2027.

The announcement comes as EV sales are declining and the market is seeing an uprising of Chinese competitors. The brand said it is aware of these challenges, especially focusing on competition with Chinese rivals offering cheap EVs for customers. The affordable car revelation also follows Volkswagen’s end of talks with Renault to jointly develop an electric version of the Twingo car.

To reduce the manufacturing cost, Volkswagen will source components from the European supply chain. It will help the company to save on the cost of transportation. It is seeking alternative supply chains to reduce the car’s price and reflect on the outcome.

Volkswagen planned an ID. 2all EV for 2025 starting at 25,000 euros. This EV will use a modular electric drive (MEB) platform with front-wheel drive. This is one of the ten new electric models that Volkswagen will launch by 2026. Among them, is a new ID.3, ID.Buzz with a long wheelbase and ID.7 has already been introduced. It will also unveil a compact electric SUV in 2026.

The ID.2 brings 166 kW/266 PS output with a range of approximately 450 km (WLTP) and a charging time of 10 to 80% in approximately 20 minutes.

The EV equips 490 to 1,330 storage volumes and 225/40 R20 wheels. The ID. 2all sports a C-pillar design developed for the first Golf.

Based on this schedule, the new 20,000 euro electric car could be ID.1. However, there’s no detail available about the design and feature of this low-cost EV at the moment.
