A new firmware code has shown some insights into a software-driven feature that will allow customers to control the performance of Tesla Model 3 and Model Y. Tesla code-sharing X account @greentheonly has discovered this code in the recent Tesla update rolled out for Model 3 and Model Y.

The code mentioned “soft performance limit” as an option for these two EVs equipped with 110kW and 160kW respectively. The electric vehicle (EV) company has introduced a 110kW version of Model 3 RWD in Singapore. It meets Certificate of Entitlement (COE) guidelines on EV power output.

Earlier this month, Tesla released a new rear-wheel driver (RWD) Model Y Long Range in the US to replace the standard RWD model. It offers 320 miles of driving range, 60 miles more than the previous standard version.

Following this model, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said a similar range can be extended for previous RWD models with over-the-air (OTA) software updates. He said that this software-driven extension is possible with newly manufactured battery cells.

This will be a paid software upgrade and it could cost between $1,500 to $2,000. This service is currently not available for the corresponding Tesla model. However, the company is working with regulators to find a solution. Despite this new revelation, we need to wait until Tesla officially comes up with this new solution and starts offering it to customers.
