Rivian partners with Renewable Energy providers for clean energy

Rivian has announced partnerships with Galehead Development and Pivot Energy to build new renewable energy and solar projects.

Galhead entered an agreement with Rivian to develop renewable energy resources designed for the electric vehicle (EV) maker’s requirements based on locations and environment.

This partnership will move based on Rivian’s “3C” framework. It is a procurement standard that commits Rivian to sourcing renewable energy from projects with a positive impact on Climate, environment, and local communities.

The 3C framework was announced in 2023 in collaboration with The Nature Conservancy. Rivian wants to put this campaign into development with new projects. Galehead will use LandCommand proprietary market intelligence technology to fulfill Rivian’s aim. It will fund and manage 3C projects and observe until projects become sustainable.

Solar Projects

Next is Pivot Energy, which will work with Rivian on 60 Megawatts (MWdc) of solar energy. Rivian has committed to purchase Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) generated from 50 Mwdc of solar. The EV company will subscribe to 10 MWdc of community solar from Pivot Energy for its Illinois manufacturing facility.

These types of REC agreements are designed to create clean energy resources in regions with solar development and add contributions to the local community. Both partners will develop new solar projects in locations with few solar resources. The region of the electric grid where the solar projects will be located is 67 percent dirtier than the US grid.

It means that the region emits two-thirds more greenhouse gases from fossil fuels compared to other areas. With its new initiatives, Rivian could create a massive impact on emissions reduction in this region.

The new community solar projects are expected to generate around 79,000 megawatts hours (MWh) of clean electricity per year. It is equivalent to powering 10,892 households annually. Two of these companies will invest $5,000 per MW built in local community organizations.

Rivian has a decarbonization strategy, which includes 2 gigawatts to enable energy to support EV charging. It is equal to 7 billion miles of driving with R1 vehicles each year. The company is also working on renewable energy goals for its facility in Normal, Illinois. It aims more than 90 percent carbon-neutral energy on an hourly basis and 100 percent by 2030.
