New Genesis GV80 to launch with second-generation ‘eM’ platform

Hyundai Motor Group is working on a new Genesis GV80 and it will be one of the first mass-produced cars to equip the ‘eM’ second-generation platform.

Hyundai planning to release two Genesis models on the 2nd eM platform. These include the GV90 and the new GV80. The new GV90 (project name JG) is decided as the first electric vehicle (EV) in the lineup to feature the 2nd gen eM platform. It was initially planned for mass production in the fourth quarter of 2025.

However, Hyundai is not in a hurry to produce this model. Now it has scheduled the Gv90 for mass production in the first quarter of 2026.

New GV80

This second generation GV80 electrified has the project name “JX2” as the second electric car based on the eM platform. Based on the current roadmap, Hyundai looking to produce the model in the third quarter of 2026.

It wants to reborn this model as a fully electric vehicle for customers and postponed production by one quarter compared to the previous plan.

eM Platform

In 2022, Hyundai introduced the eM platform for EVs across all segments and it will provide 50 percent improvements in driving range on a single charge compared to existing EVs. The Korean car maker is developing autonomous support for Level 3 or higher autonomous driving technology and OTA software update features.

The eM production target for GV90 is 20,000 to 30,000 units and the 2nd generation GV80 EV could produce 30,000 units. The sales target for the 2nd gen GV80 model is not too high considering last year’s performance.

Sales are crucial to these new-gen vehicles and Hyundai is slowing down its new eM platform due to the slowdown in the EV market. The car company will expand its focus on hybrid cars with the existing first-gen E-GMP electric vehicles.
