Volvo’s electrified car sales up 53% in April 2024

Volvo’s electrified car sales increased 53% in April 2024 compared to the same period last year. Its electrified models accounted for 48% of global car sales through the past month.

These numbers are constituted by the full electric small SUV EX30 featuring single and dual motors with RWD and AWD drivetrains. The model has a 69kWh battery capacity with DC fast charging. It delivers 268 hp to accelerate 0-60mph in 5.1 seconds with a single model. While the dual motor equips 422hp with 3.4-second acceleration.

“I am happy to see the positive reception from EX30 customers as we ramp up deliveries of the car, as well as the continued growth of our electrified model,” said Born Annwall, Chief Commercial Officer and Deputy CEO at Volvo Cars.

Volvo sold 31,523 cars in April up from 20,628 in April 2022 a 53% increase in sales. The total electric car sales from January to April were 106,518 compared to 88,031 units in the first four months of 2023 with a 21% yearly improvement.

Among these, it sold 17,090 fully electric vehicles in April 2024 compared to 8,830 in April 2023, a 94% year-over-year (YoY) increase. The fully electric model sales were 55,261 units in the first four months of 2024 and increased 42% from 38,899 units in 2023.

Plug-in hybrids on the other hand combined 14,443 units in April 2024 compared to 11,798 units in 2023 with a 22% increase. The first four months of this year recorded 51,257 plug-in hybrid sales compared to 48,132 units sold from January to April in 2023.

Volvo reported that its car sales in the U.S. recorded 10,604 units in the past month compared to 9,611 units in April 2023 with a 10% year-over-year improvement. This number grew to 41,555 vehicles in the first four months of this year with a 15% year-over-year improvement.

The carmaker said it sold 3,334 electrified models in April and 11,422 models through Jan-Apr in 2024. These figures increased by 13% and 7% respectively.
