Hyundai Motor has planned to launch a refreshed NEXO hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) crossover in the second quarter of this year. NEXO FCEV generates electricity by mixing oxygen with compressed hydrogen to create a flow of electrons.

This news broke out after Hyundai recently shared its plans and upgrades in the new model with existing customers and user clubs and received their feedback, revealing sources related to the matter to KEDglobal.

This refreshed Hyundai NEXO version will bring a larger fuel tank than the existing car. Other new upgrades were made to specifications including advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) and over-the-air (OTA) software upgrades for suspension and braking systems.

The South Korean automaker is near the final stage of the new NEXO FCEV development. This will follow the testing procedure of related technologies. A company official said that Hyundai has made new improvements based on the customer’s opinion in different aspects of the car including powertrain, infotainment system, and the design language.

The existing model comes with a 120kwh max power, 395 nm torque, and 179 kph max speed. It equips a 64kWh battery and single-speed reduction gear drive system. This car offers a permanent magnet synchronous motor. The car is 4,670 mm in length, 1,860mm wide, and 1,630mm tall.

Market Statics:

Data from SNE research shows that the global sales of NEXO have shrunk to 4,709 units in 2023 compared to 11,179 units in 2022. Hyundai’s global FCEV market declined to 34.7 percent last year compared to 54.8 percent in 2022. Despite remaining the top FCEV player, the company has experienced a lower demand in this segment.

On the other hand, Toyota Motor has increased its FCEV market share from 17.9 percent to 26.6 percent credited to the Mirai sedan. The research data confirmed that last year wasn’t fruitful and experienced a 30.2% decline.
