Chinese car maker Nio has announced a trial run for its massive 150kWh electric vehicle (EV) solid-state battery pack starting next month.

The trial program will begin on May 1 and remain open until May 31 in China. The company will keep it available for Nio Destination, the car maker’s official rental service.

During the trial run, customers rent a Nio car for three days or more to get a chance to use a 150kWh battery-pack vehicle. Instead of selecting a 150kWh battery option, Nio will randomly select customers to experience this large battery with no additional charges.

The company has announced an opening 7-day welcome discount offer for the 150kWh battery pack and will increase the rent amount. This announcement comes as China set to celebrate the Labor Day holiday from May 1-5, which could result in a sharp increase in travel.

Other than trials, Nio will make this battery pack operational starting June 1, and it will be available for rent along with other options daily.

Nio unveiled a 150kWh semi-solid-state battery pack with an ET7 sedan in 2020. This capacity enabled a travel range of up to 1,000 kilometers on a single charge.

Earlier this month, Nio organized a ceremony in China to celebrate the first mass production of a 150-kWh battery pack coming out of the production line.

The Chinese carmaker utilizes 70 and 75-kWh standard range and 100-kWh long-range battery packs. Despite providing a high driving range, a 150kWh battery requires extra production cost and time. In that case, standard and long range may be sufficient in most driving scenarios.
