AI Chatbot Grok to launch for Tesla cars, confirms CEO

Tesla CEO, Elon Musk confirmed that the electric vehicle (EV) maker will launch Artificial Intelligence (AI) chatbot Grok in cars. This brief affirmation comes amid generative AI expanding foot into automotive to simplify user interactions.

The EV maker has been using AI for years to build data centers and launch self-driving technology. Its user interface is considered top-notch in the industry but xAI’s chatbot could improve the user experience.

Grok is a large language model (LLM) designed and developed by xAI, a company owned by Elon Musk. Grok was launched in November last year and has recently received an update to version 1.5. It also can scan images and summarize them. A large language model can understand and help enable features with simple interactions.

However, it’s not alone to show interest in LLMs. Mercedes-Benz announced last year the integration of ChatGPT, a well-known large language model-based chatbot, into its digital ecosystem.

Stellantis Peugeot said it is integrating ChatGPT in the natural voice recognition in its i-cockpit. It also uses the SoundHound Chat AI platform. The tech enables users to know about places, history, artists, technology, cooking, traveling, and more.

Earlier this year, Volkswagen shared a demo of ChatGPT integration into its IDA voice assistant. The automaker will offer ChatGPT as a standard feature in new models in the second quarter of 2024.

BMW already started using Amazon’s Alexa LLM in its voice assistant for things like recommendations on different BMW drive modes and get them activated. It also allows users to manage the infotainment system settings.

Grok has capabilities for text-to-text conversations and could provide replies in two language modes. The model is currently available on the social media site X, formerly Twitter.

However, it’s unclear whether Grok will get a separate integration into the system or run through the X app on the Tesla app.
