Tesla FSD achieves 1 billion miles drive

Tesla today announced that its full self-driving (FSD) technology has achieved 1 billion miles of driving as the company is potentially making its way towards Robotaxi later this year.

Tesla started testing FSD under “Beta” in late 2020, the system allows cars to drive themselves in public while maneuvering. FSD can detect traffic, read signals, and stop signs, and respond to on-road hazards in real-time.

According to the graph, the company began early testing experience for FSD in 2021 and then expanded its use cases with Tesla cars with limited testers. For the next three years, the company trained the FSD system with driving data and added thousands of lines of manual code.

Last year, the company started testing FSD 12, which is by far the most advanced FSD version with neural nets. Tesla started a wide release of FSD Version 11 for all of the new cars and bundled them with this piece of tech in the same year.

In the past 10 months, Tesla recorded around 900 million miles of training data. Interestingly, the company has achieved over 100 million within one month. This instant jump in the graph comes after opening FSD 12 for more users.

Tesla CEO, Elon Musk said it won’t be long before Tesla exceeds 10 billion miles of FSD. Tesla is now the only major automaker that has acquired such driving data around with on-road vehicles.

The announcement comes amid the company is preparing to unveil a Robotaxi in August. This new product could be utilizing the FSD system to guide itself through traffic.
