Europe may not allow Tesla FSD Supervised
Tesla has brought some new revelations about a possible FSD supervised release in Europe which may not happen any time soon.
Rohan Patel, Telsa Policy head shared details about the current challenge in launching FSD supervised for European Tesla owners.
The company recently started releasing supervised full self-driving (FSD) for subscribers in the U.S. The capability allows a vehicle to drive itself through traffic. It will make lane changes, follow navigation routes, make turns, and can even watch traffic and react in real-time.
However, a driver is needed on the seat to monitor while FSD makes maneuvers. The driver can take control anytime in case of any unwanted maneuver.
Patel said that the current EU regulations don’t allow for these system-initiated maneuvers from the Supervised FSD system.
An X user @aikisteve mentioned that the new DCAS regs have been approved by UNECE outside of North America. “What’s the timeline for Tesla to certify for DCAS” he asked.
Driver Control Assistance Systems regulations are rules from the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE). It is said to provide minimum safety requirements for vehicle safety requirements for vehicles using advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) including lane keep assist.
The system somewhat simplifies the use of automated driving technologies. However, it doesn’t address the key issues such as system-initiated maneuvers. New DCAS regulation could go into effect by November this year.
The Tesla executive further explains that the rules will keep a hold on the safety features of supervised FSD to release for customers.
“We will see a better FSD system towards the end of the year, as a result of some recent changes, but more needs to change at the UN in order to allow for the full safety benefits of Supervised FSD,” said Patel.
Meanwhile, Tesla could still release new improvements for older FSD versions, suggests Patel. He mentioned that the updated DCAS regulation could enable some degree of changes in the existing FSD. There are no specific details available at the moment.
