iPhone users will be able download apps directly from developer website in EU

Apple today announced a new distribution service for European Union (EU) developers to publish apps directly through their website and allow iPhone users to sideload them.

The company confirmed that a software update will rollout later this spring that will enable Web Distribution. It will authorize developers to launch their iOS apps to EU users directly through the website on the server.

The developer will be responsible for designing promotions, in-app payments, discounts, and other deals.

Web Distribution:

Apple will release access to APIs to support developers for app distribution from the web, built-in system functionality, backup and restore users’ apps, and more.

Web-distributed apps must meet Notarization guidelines to safeguard the platform’s integrity. Also, developers registered in App Store Connect are the only ones that can publish apps under Web Distribution.

The Cupertino-based company explained that the App Store Connect allows developers to download signed binary assets and host them on their website for distribution.

To install apps from a developer’s website, iPhone users will have to first need to permit the developer to install apps from the Settings of their iPhone.

When a user triggers installation, the iOS system will show a screen to take installation permission with developer details, developer name, app description, app screenshots, and system age rating.
