xAI Grok open source

xAI will make its first AI large language model (LLM) Grok open source by this week, says xAI founder Elon Musk.

Musk founded xAI in March 2023 and the company is registered to work on artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. It was registered in Nevada and headquartered in the San Francisco Bay Area in California.

The company houses well-known faces including Igor Baushckin who previously worked at Google’s AI arm DeepMind. The AI firm hired employees from OpenAI, Google Research, Microsoft Research, Tesla, and the University of Toronto.

In November last year, xAI announced Grok, its first AI Chatbot with LLM technology. Unlike its competitors such as ChatGPT and Gemini, Grok takes real-time sources from social media site X, formerly known as Twitter.

Gork is only available for the X users as an integration under a “Premium+” subscription plan. Since its launch, xAI has made new improvements to the platform with increased response speed. The current version of Grok is based on the Grok-1 system.

Going open source means that the xAI will publish the source code for Grok online. This will allow the open-source community to research its source code and developers to experiment with its capabilities.

The open-source code still has an open source license and there’s no information available on the terms for the time being.

Musk vs OpenAI:

The latest news appeared a week after Musk filed a lawsuit against OpenAI for distancing itself from its open-source foundation and turning more into closed source.

Musk also co-founded OpenAI in 2015 alongside Sam Altman, who’s serving as the CEO. Musk later left the AI firm.

He said in the court filing that OpenAI and its new board of members have low knowledge of AI developments and the company is operating as a maximum profit-seeker.

The lawsuit alleges that Microsoft controls decisions made inside the OpenAI. However, the AI firm refused these claims saying that the funding is required to keep its operation toward future developments.
