EV battery makers aiming 300 km charge under 5 minutes
South Korean battery makers LG Energy Solution, SK On, and Samsung SDI are now preparing ultrafast charging battery solutions for electric vehicles (EV) that could fill 300 km capacity within 5 minutes.
These companies are proposing rapid changes in the EV infrastructure to grow demand and improve the charging experience.
This move aims to match the time of traditional internal combustion engine vehicles and the average distance of individual trips, predominately below 300 kilometers.
Typically an EV requires 30 minutes to fill 80 percent of a battery’s capacity around 300 kilometers of range. The aim is to clip the charging time to 10 minutes or below before 2030.
SK On recently showcased its Advanced SF (Super Fast) battery technology under the “Speed On” theme. This tech could boost a 9 percent increase in energy density over its 2021 version.
Its booth featured the Kia EV 9 with SK On’s 99.8-kilowatt-hour Advanced SF battery. This EV has 350 kilowatts of fast charging to fill 10 to 80 percent level in 25 minutes.
This tech has filled 400 km of range from the 501 kilometers range that the car has to offer.
Lee Jon-ha, Principal Researcher at SK On’s researcher and development center, also called for ultrafast charging infrastructure to complement the battery industry’s advancements during his keynote presentation.
He said that 300 kilometers of range in just 5 to 10 minutes will need fast charging infrastructure such as 450 kW chargers.
Samsung SDI is also looking to contribute its technologies to achieve 8 to 80 percent in just nine minutes to charge 300 kilometers. The Korena company is looking to produce this battery technology by 2026 followed by wide release.
