iOS 17.4: What will it bring for global iPhones aside from EU

A few days ago, Apple rolled out the release candidate for iOS 17.4 with new EU-specific changes but some new features will also be available for global users.

What are the EU-specific changes?

iOS, the App Store, and its payment system will now follow EU Digital Markets Act (DMA) rules. It includes third-party app installation support for iOS devices. Moreover, developers can now add their payment system instead of following Apple’s.

The company opened many of the APIs to support third-party app development including NFC for banking and financial systems.

Global user:

iOS 17.4 will add new mushroom, phoenix, lime, broken chain, and shaking heads emoji on the keyboard. There are 18 new people and body emojis added the option to face them in either direction.

Apple Podcasts is getting a new transcripts feature that will let you follow an episode with text that highlights in sync with the audio in English, Spanish, French, and German.

You will be able to read in full, search for a word or phrase, tap to play from a specific point and use accessibility features such as text size, contrast, and voiceover.

Siri will get a new capability to announce received messages. Battery settings will host “Battery Health” that will show battery cycle count, manufacture date, and first use on iPhone 15 and 15 pro models.

After this update, the call identification screen will show the Apple-verified business name, logo, and department name once available.

Apple Cash will bring virtual card numbers to allow you to pay with Apple Cash at any supported merchants by typing your virtual card number from Wallet or through Safari AutoFill.

There are two new fixes including where contact pictures appeared as blank in the Find My application. The second fix comes for Dual SIM users where the phone number changes from primary to secondary and it is visible to a group they have messaged.
