iPhone 17 and 17 Plus to equip ProMotion screen

Apple could upgrade the standard iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Plus with a ProMotion screen for smoother visuals similar to the iPhone 17 Pro models.

TheLec reports Apple is likely to adopt low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) thin-film transistor (TFT) type organic light-emitting diode (OLED) to the entire iPhone 17 series.

Starting the iPhone 13 series in 2021, Apple began applying LTPO TFT to Pro and Pro Max Models. The standard and the Plus model on the other hand featured a low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) screen.

The major upgrade in the display is arranged with the iPhone 14 Pro lineup in 2022 which brings always on-screen feature. LTPO screen saves power consumption by reducing leakage current compared to the LTPS method.

Supply Chain

The latest input about the iPhone 17 series appeared in a supply chain report which indicates that BOE may not supply LTPO for next year’s iPhones.

China’s BOE is capable of supplying LTPO for Chinese smartphone makers but it’s not able to meet Apple’s requirement of LTPO OLEDs for iPhones.

The report mentioned that BOE did send some samples to Apple last year but it may not finalized for the iPhone 16 series. Therefore, the company has been expecting this supply to be completed next year.

The other reason for BOE’s failure to meet Apple’s requirement is related to the product quality, which needs some optimization after it reaches Apple’s warehouse.

Even if BOE can’t make it to the next year’s supply chain, Apple would still prefer expanding ProMotion screens to all iPhone 17 models. The company could further expand orders from existing suppliers including Samsung and LG.

iPhone SE 4

Instead of supplying for iPhone 17, BOE could add supplies for next year’s SE 4 model.

Adding ProMotion LTPO screen to the iPhone 17 and 17 Plus would make sense and allow the company to increase the visual experience for customers.
