Apple had different notch prototypes before launching Dynamic Island with the iPhone 14 series in 2022, according to a report.

Findings from Macrumors reveal that Apple experimented with various notch types for models after the iPhone 13 series.

One of these new experiments includes a sidebar menu from the right side of the screen. Such a feature can be found in Android devices which come out with the user swipes in from the edge of the screen.

This sidebar works as a small menu with key features such as WiFI, network, brightness, volume, and battery levels.  This sidebar prototype was similar to a second notch but on the side of the phone.

The notch would automatically retract once the interactions were completed.

Another prototype for the notch is to darken the entire status bar including the notch. It was a kind of familiar design of Google’s Pixel 4 but later it became common for Android phones with notch, punch holes, and pill-shaped screen designs.

Dynamic Island

Apple dropped all of the prototypes and came up with Dynamic Island. There were still new tests made before the company rolled it out in production with the iPhone 14 Pro series.

The dynamic island occupies less space than the notch system. Not the design but the company utilized this new aesthetic as a feature that allows users to check alerts and current activity in progress in real time.
