IONNA kicks off operations in North America, first EV chargers launching this year

IONNA, an electric vehicle (EV) charging station services venture of top automakers, has received approval from regulatory authorities and officially started operations in North America.

Announced in July 2023, IONNA is a joint venture of BMW, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, and Stellantis. The venture aims to create a large network of charging stations for EVs across North America.

IONNA is looking to install at least 30,000 high-powered charging stations and its first charging station will be launched in the U.S. sometime this year. The launch expansion will happen to Canada later on.

IONNA says its charging stations support both Combined Charging Station (CCS) and North American Charging Standard (NACS). It is also working according to the requirements of the U.S. National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program.

These charging stations will be installed near a complex with amenities such as restrooms, food service, and retail operations.

These car makers can provide in-app services such as charging reservations, smart route planning and navigation, mobile payment systems, energy management, and other features.

New CEO:

Seth Cutler was appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at IONNA. Before this job role, he was Senior Vice President of Technical Operations at EV Connect, a California-based EV charger location service.

He took the office as CEO on February 1, 2024, and currently looking at operations in engineering and other development projects to scale up the venture.
