Hyundai and Kia exceeds 1.5 million EV sales around the globe

Hyundai and its sister brand Kia on Sunday announced a new milestone of 1.5 million electric vehicle (EV) sales across the globe.

The latest achievement comes after 12 years of launching the first mass-produced EV model BlueOn in South Korea in July 2011.

The Hyundai Motor Group accounted for cumulative sales of 1,538,689 units of EVs including 886,653 units of Hyundai brand and 652,036 units of Kia branded EVs by the end of last year.

In 2023 alone, these car makers sold a total of 516,441 EVs in the global market with an increase of 38.9% compared to 2022. From this, 78.3% of vehicles were sold globally, and 21.7% sold in South Korea.

This figure brings us to the numbers that 8 out of every 10 electric vehicles from the Hybrid Group were sold overseas.

Hyundai Kona Electric sold 327,778 units after it was launched in 2018. This figure consists of 302,299 units from the first generation and 24,479 units from the second generation model.

Introduced in 2021, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 comes second by selling 279,375 units and exceeded 200,000 cumulative export units by 2023.

Kia’s Niro EV acquired a third spot in the overall Hyundai Motor Group tally with a total of 277,048 units. The first-gen model sold 175,501 units, and second-gen vehicles sold 106,547 units.

Kia EV6 becomes the show stopper with 200,905 cumulative sales by the end of 2023.
