Dual Motor AWD BMW i5 xDrive40 EV to launch in March

BMW has announced that the BMW i5 xDrive40 will launch in March this year with dual motor and all-wheel drive (AWD). This is the third fully electric variant from the new BMW 5 series lineup.

The new BMW i5 xDrive40 uses two fifth-generation electric drive units. One of these is installed on the front axle and the other one on the rear axle to generate a total system output of 389 horsepower and 435 lb-ft peak torque.

The AWD system of BMW i5 xDrive40 will accelerate from 0-60 mph in 5.2 seconds with a top speed of 130 mph.

The EV packs an 84.3 kWh HV battery with a combined charging unit to enable an AC charging rate of 11 kW. The DC charging rate is up to 205 kW for 10-80% battery charging within 30 minutes.

The i5 xDrive40 has a Plug and Charge Multi Contract feature for automatic payment from the vehicle at public charging points. It can store up to 5 individual payment accounts for different charging points.

Once connected to the charging point, the vehicle will automatically receive the payment information through the charging cable. The payment will be processed by the vehicle owner through authentication. Users will also have an option to set trusted charging locations for automatic payments.

BMW confirmed that the 2025 i5 xDrive40 will begin production in March and it is priced at a base MSRP of $70,000 and an additional $995 for destination and handling charges across the U.S.
