Volkswagen is working on an improved version of the Volkswagen ID.3 electric vehicle (EV) and it could serve as an electric alternative to the Golf GTI.

A prototype seen by Autocar reveals that Volkswagen is testing a new range of ID.3 electric versions with two-wheel drive. Yet this new VW hatchback is likely to bring rear-wheel drive.

This model could be called Volkswagen ID.3 GTX, which was previously reserved for the company’s four-wheel-drive EVs.

Despite missing technical specifications, the new ID.3 GTX could equip a powerful APP550 motor over the current APP310 used in ID.3.

The motor could provide up to 282bhp and 402lb-ft of torque compared to 200bhp and 230lbf-ft torque in an existing ID.3 vehicle.

Furthermore, the new ID.3 GTX could get a tuned chassis with a better gear system for the steering, firmer springs, dampers, and lowered ride height.

Volkswagen also revised the driving mode controller and recalibrated stability as well as a traction control system.

Last but not least, the battery capacity of the Volkswagen ID.3 GTX may be 77kWh with over 311 miles of range.
