Maryland is about to install 60 new electric vehicle charging stations to ease up the electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem and grow new clean energy vehicle buyers.

The latest announcement came from Governor Wes Moore on Friday at West Baltimore’s Coppin State University.

The planned charging station will be hosted throughout the state including recreation centers, apartment complexes, churches, gas stations, and grocery stores to support low-income communities.

The construction of these 60 chargers will be funded by $15 million from the Biartisan Infrastructure Law passed by Congress in 2021. The same grant program will now fund new chargers across the nation.

The new 60 chargers will be an addition to the already installed 1,600 public charging stations in Maryland.

Meanwhile, Maryland Transportation Secretary Paul Wiedefeld said on Friday that the state has registered around 100,000 electric vehicles. It is about 15 EVs for every 1000 people.

The move also comes at a point when the state has unveiled a plan to cut 60% of its climate-warming emissions by 2031 and reach net zero by 2045.

But we also can’t deny that the state is currently cutting costs because of budget shortfalls. In that case, Gov. Wes Moore said he would bring a climate-focused executive order to ensure the state follows its newly released environmental tasks.
