300-400 new EV chargers will be installed in Atlanta
Finding new charging stations will become easier in Atlanta with over 300-400 electric vehicle (EV) chargers announced by the Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) on Thursday.
The latest move is part of the $6.1 million grant from the Federal Department of Transportations Charging and Fueling Infrastructure Discretionary Grant Program.
The first round of charging ports funded with this grant may be installed within 12-18 months of the deadline. As for now, metro Atlanta hosts about 1,800 to 2,000 public Level 2 EV charging station ports.
“Charging infrastructure right now is clustered in more affluent and more densely developed areas of our region,” said John Orr, Managing Director of Transportation Planning at ARC. “These funds provide an opportunity to not only expand the total number of available high-quality charging stations but also fill in some of these gaps that present a barrier to EV adoption.”
Here are the EV charging ports available in Atlanta based on three classes.
Level 1 enables charging through 120-volt residential outlets. It takes 40-50 hours to charge 0-80% EV battery capacity.
Level 2 brings 240V or 208V ports for high-rate charging for home, workplace, and public charging stations. It takes 4-10 hours to fill 0-80% battery level of an EV.
Level 3 charging port equips fast rapid charging for highways and takes 20 minutes to 1 hour to charge EV battery from 0 to 80%.
New Grant:
Yesterday, the Biden Administration granted $623 million to build an EV charging network across different states of the U.S. Read more about this grant here.
