Toyota to commercialize solid-state battery EVs in near future
Toyota is planning to commercialize solid-state battery electric vehicles (EVs) shortly with improved charging speed and durability.
The latest announcement made by Vikram Gulati, head of Toyota Kirloskar Motor India came during an investment summit in the Indian State of Gujrat, reports Moneycontrol.
“We will be rolling out our electric vehicles with solid-state batteries in a couple of years from now,” said Gulati.
He also mentioned that the solid-state battery vehicle will bring extended range and fast charging with a long recharge life cycle.
Japan’s Suzuki Motor confirmed that its Indian subsidiary and Toyota partner Maruti Suzuki would export the first battery EV to Japan and Europe, which would be the first time Maruti to send its vehicles to the parent company in the Japanese market.
Solid state battery is a next-generation battery technology that is still under development but it has new capabilities to empower the EV experience.
SSB batteries replace liquid electrolytes with solid electrolytes and eliminate flammability as well as leakage risks. It brings benefits such as increased energy density, fast charging, and a wide operating temperature range.
Bringing a volume production to the market is still a challenge that needs to be resolved but it’s expected to commercialize around a new few years.
