Tesla Cybertruck collides with Toyota Corolla, first accident reported in California
Photographs of a Tesla Cybertruck were posted on Reddit on Thursday showing its collision with a Toyota vehicle in a road accident in California.
Following the images, California Highway Patrol (CHP) affirmed this accident to TheVerge that the units responded to a two-vehicle accident on SR 35 (Skyline Boulevard).
The area of the event is south of Page Mill Road, Lao Alto at around 2:05 PM local time.
The accident includes Tesla’s first electric pick-up Cybertruck and the 2009 version of the Toyota Corolla, from what is observed from the images.
The good thing about the early findings is that no major injuries. Still, the Cybertruck driver was labeled as having “a suspected minor injury”, and refused to take medical attention.
Furthermore, the vehicle doesn’t appear to be using the autopilot feature but an investigation is underway.
More details shared by TheAutopian reveal that the Cybertruck is registered with Texas plates to a Palo Alto address, while the Toyota vehicle is registered locally.
Below you can check the statement by the local police authorities:
“On December 28, 2023, at approximately 2:05 pm, CHP Redwood City units were dispatched to a two-vehicle crash on SR-35 (Skyline Boulevard), south of Page Mill Road. Our preliminary investigation indicates a Toyota Corolla was traveling south on SR-35 southbound, south of Page Mill Road, at an unknown speed, when the driver, for unknown reasons, turned to the right and subsequently struck a dirt embankment on the right shoulder. The Toyota then re-entered the roadway, crossed over the double yellow lines into the northbound lane, and crashed into a Tesla Cybertruck traveling north on SR-35 northbound.”
Automated Message:
The CHP reportedly received an automated text message after the collision. This might be sent by the Cybertruck with a new auto 911 calling feature that Tesla recently rolled out an OTA software update. The function relies on a phone to be connected to the vehicle.
Damage
The pictures show major suffocation on the Toyota car, while the Tesla Cybertruck looks fine from the right side. However, it’s more likely that the collision might have happened on the left side of the Cybertruck.
Moreover, the collision triggered the airbags, which can be seen on the driver side of the seat.
The first Tesla Cybertruck accident may open some heated debate over its safety measurement but it’s too early to reach any conclusion in this matter.
